Russia to launch120 MW of renewable energy facilities in 2017

MOSCOW, Apr 5 (PRIME) -- Russia plans to launch 120 megawatt (MW) of renewable energy facilities in 2017, a 70% rise on the year, Sergei Romanov, Deputy Director of the State Energy Policy Department at the Energy Ministry, said at a presentation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on Wednesday.

“About 120 MW of renewable facilities will be finished in 2017, including 90 MW of solar farms in different regions of the country,” he said.

He added that the projects are implemented by Hevel Solar and Solar Systems companies.

First Deputy Energy Minister Alexei Teksler said that solar and wind energy will become self-sustained and will need no government support in Russia from 2025.

“The program to support renewables is designed until 2024 and we forecast, basing on the technology development trends, a decline in cost of production and improvement in storage capabilities, that from 2025 such power facilities will be comparable or close to conventional generation,” the official said.

He added that this means they will be able to develop without state support that time and said that some of the projects are already self-sufficient.
